Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi: Dazed and confused

Offical image of the launch spec Bajaj Pulsar DTS-Fi
Okay, today's officially not a good day. Like I've said somewhere before (reply to a comment?), I was given to believe that the Pulsar DTS-Fi was a December launch. However, that, I'm now being told is not true. Never was. No cigar.

To put a fine point on it, my source was adamant that the bike was ready to launch and due for a end-2006 calendar launch. Which, I might add, would be consistent with Bajaj's promise of many launches in the calendar year. A promise that they made at the Auto Expo 2006 and a promise that is well nigh broken for now, with the Sonic definitely not being launched this calendar year, and it appears doubtful whether it will even make the financial year.

However, I spoke to someone else in Bajaj today and this person, who is as credible as the other chap insists that the DTS-Fi was never scheduled for a calendar 2006 launch. It was, and is, scheduled for a March 2007 commercial debut, and so far, that's on target and if there is a change, that would mean a later launch, April or June 2007. Eh?

If that be the case, was the pre-launch preview ride for our fair country's motoring journalists in June this year truly a flash in the pan brought on by the fear that the HH Glamour FI might have stolen the DTS-Fi's BFG - fuel injection? Or is Bajaj in such a strong market position that it can play these games, literally at will and not suffer? And afford to do a touch and try on products almost a year before they're due for launch? Or sit on market ready products and decide strategically appropriate launch dates? Or could Bajaj be waiting to one-up the now-more-or-less-official Karizma upgrade which is expected at the end of this fiscal? Both of the latter things it appeared to do calmly with the new 'Phantom' Pulsar 150..

In either case, I am certain that many fans of Bajaj, the Pulsar and those who've already sold their previous bikes and are ready with cash for the 220 are beginning to get very itch at the best and very, very pissed off at the worst. Which isn't a good thing for a manufacturer in a fickle marketplace...

this is like the worst news of the day. or year.

my guess is they think they can make more money off the old 150 and 180, now that they've added the digital bits from the 220, so why launch the 220 when you can still squeeze a few crores from the 1xx ..

*yawn*

Another rumor!

I'll believe ALL such speculation when something actually happens. Till then, more yawns!

PS: NOthing against you, but i'm SICK of the speculation!

One thing that you have to hand it to Bajaj, they are quite good strategically. If they are delaying the launch or as the case might be enticing public and journo’s with promises of a new product, it must be aligned with their strategy of preemptive strike to create a hype regarding their products.

In today’s scenario even if the Karizma upgrade is launched, many will wait for the launch of Pulsar DTS-Fi 220 because they will be afraid that they might go in for a bike that is less powerful than the upcoming pulsar. And since we all know Bajaj is good at retaliating with good products at a good price, they will take the upper hand even with a delayed launch. Unless off course Hero Honda is able to exceed expectations set by the preview of Pulsar 220.

ok, u may wanna chk this out and post a new thread. was at the speed/autocar performance show at BKC today, they also had a pulsar 200. same as the 220 except the engine is a dtsi non fi. has an oil cooler like the 220. no rear disc. fairing same as 180. no xenon. two bikinis(??!!) on the tank. think the 200 looks quite shite actually.

Anonymous said...

Damn, just saw my post: slight typo. i meant the 220 fi looks shite, not the 200. the 200 actually adds on to the 180 look very nicely, with the bikini thingys shrouding the ends of the oil cooler. the 220 looks crap because the fairing is positioned too much in front. even an add-on full fairing wouldnt help much, the damn thing just looks disproportionate.

GIMME MY BIKE! Waaaaaaaaah! Waaaaaah! I want my bike now! I'll pay you! Name the price...Gimme the bike! GIVE GIVE GIVE!

*my house is flooded with my tears...can somebody pilfer some money from the PMs relief fund???*

Anonymous said...

no offense, but if you have the money than go for a import instead of crying foul!

Anonymous said...

Hey Yogesh... Go for an import??? Isn't the pricing of a Indian premium bike and a, say 250cc import worlds apart?? I'd be spending nearly 2.5lakhs + the custom duty (110% something ain't it?) for a Yamaha Fazer 250cc... Does it make sense??? Whereas I'd be done with some 1.2 lakhs (at the max) for the Pulsar..

And I totally agree with your comment. It's truly an awesome strategy..Pit the 200cc bull against the Zma.. See how the results turn out.. And tweak the 220cc to be leagues ahead of the Zma FI and ensure eternal supremacy of the Pulsar... Works fine as long as its business.. but we ( ME! ), humans, often take everything to the heart...everything's personal.. so making people wait for months after givin them a sneak peak.. is barbaric..

Theslayer I posted that you should go for an import because in the previous post you werent talking about 1.2L. You were just saying “I want my bike now! I'll pay you! Name the price...Gimme the bike! GIVE GIVE GIVE!”

Didn’t knew that you had a price cap as well!

Anonymous said...

Yooogesh! Oh yeah... tantrums of a kid who'd just been denied his candy! That is all there is to my first post! GIVE GIVE GIVE.. yeah..Was yelling wasn't I? :D And even so..I said I'd give any price for the bike from Bajaj... those guys are the sanest people in our country with regard to pricing a product..... Maybe I'm wrong.. Oh welll!

surely not that dazed ;?

Are you so dazed that you are unable to blog though you seem right enough to moderate comments.

Or is this a deliberate strategy like Bajaj to test the paitence of blog visitors. I am telling you Bajaj may be safe. But if you continue like this you better start wearing protective gear while you are off motorcycle too. ;)

Pulsar 220 cc Dtsfi and Pulsar 200cc Dtsi Launched!!!

its an old strategy of bajaj, remember the eliminator launch, ultimately everyone was fed up and it didnt sell to too well. Not as much as was expected as they jacked up the prices. No one will pay over 90 K for this just about 20 bhp bike, unless theyre desperate to increase bajajs share price. Lets accept it, our country aint seeing the 250s and 400s ever....

Anonymous said...

Its June and the 220 fuel injection still isnt on the road. Sad news for those who were anxiously waiting for it, since last year. Even poorer for Bajaj two wheeler manufacturers. They never lived upto launch dates with the Eliminator and wont with this one. Looks like they are over rating their product to think people would be desperate for it. Think its high time Bajaj riders shift loyalties to Hero Honda and Honda. Plus Yam might launch their 250 fazer sometime end of year, so lets see if Pulsar is serious about the competition or just shoving crap into the market as with the failure of their fuel injectors on 220 FI. Ask any Pune-ite they will cnfrm this.

looks like its just a 200 with a new fairing.. thats all.. only hype.. nothig less.. get a pulsar 150 new model .. add a sporty fairing and it will look the same like the new 220 DTSFI with the same LED lights and all..... minus the engine.. Old wine in a new bottle.. aage aur thoda sa nilko bajaj.. grow a bit more and make us proud.. all these bullshit marketing gimmicks wont work for this new generation.. we've come a long way.. thanks..
